The Sky Soundbox is a high-end home cinema soundsystem developed in partnership with renowned french audio firm Devialet.
Designed specifically for Sky TV’s programme portfolio, the box analyses the sound spectrum of whatever you’re watching and creates a tailored soundscape to suit.
So whether it’s blockbuster movies on Sky Cinema, Game of Thrones on Sky Atlantic, or Super Sunday on Sky Sports Premier League, it automatically optimises itself for the best experience.
The Soundbox also has something called dynamic volume management, which adjusts noise levels in real-time to boost quiet dialogue or temper explosive action.
We like to call this ‘Goldilocks mode’ because everything is just right and it removes the need for constantly fiddling with the remote control.
Rather than placing speakers around the room to create 5.1 surround sound, Devialet’s all-in-one box is designed to bounce ambient sound off the walls.
Sky claims this spatial surround sound is as good as the real thing thanks to a combination of six 3-inch woofers and three 2-inch speakers shoehorned into the compact 140W cabinet.
The Soundbox has HDMI and digital optical connectivity, Bluetooth 4.1, and is compatible with Dolby Digital+. It will also connect wirelessly to a Sky Q box via Apple Airplay.
If you think you’ve heard of Devialet before, it’s probably because they’re responsible for the outrageous Phantom Gold wireless speaker worth an eye watering £2,190.
However, there’s no need to wince at the price tag here with the Soundbox coming in at a scarcely believable £249.
So what’s the catch? Well, to get one at that price you must be a Sky Q multiscreen customer. For all other Sky subscribers it’s available for a still palatable £299.
If you’re a non-Sky customer the price tag leaps to £799, although to be honest we’d still file this under ‘T’ for tempting.
The Soundbox goes on sale later this autumn, but you can pre-register your interest now to bag one of the first off the production line.
