Nike’s Back to the Future-worthy Vapormax will have you walking on air thanks to a radically reinvented cushioning system.
The next generation Air Max range benefits from boffins using sensors to place cushioning and impact protection where it’s needed most. The result is the Vapormax, weighing just 207 grams and promising Nike’s most comfortable and near-weightless experience yet.
The reinvented cushioning system is said to give athletes a gravity-defying sensation as they run, while revolutionary Flyknit fabric remains loose around the toes for added comfort, but crucially tightens up in the areas where added support is required, such as the arch and heel.
Rubber pods are fitted to high impact areas to increase durability and the striking outsole features integrated TPU lugs and carved out sections, which give the Air Max it’s trademark elasticity and flexibility. Finally, Flywire technology integrates with the laces to securely support the mid-foot.
Zachary Elder, Nike’s Cushioning Innovation Designer (yes, that’s a thing), describes it as “running on air… as you step down, each lug gets pushed into the air unit, ramping up the pressure… as you step off, the pressure releases, creating that springy bounce.”
